Maui Accommodations

So You're Thinking About Coming to Maui!

Named the “Best Island in the World” time and time again, Maui really has it all. You'll find every land, sea and air activity you would want in a tropical paradise. From heavenly Hana to picturesque Lahaina, from Haleakala Crater, “the house of the Sun” to the marine preserve at Molokini, Maui is a magical island. And every winter, thousands of humpback whales come home to the crystal waters of Maui for breeding. In Hawaii they say “maui no ka oi,” which means, “Maui is the best.” I tend to agree, not just because I live here, but after visiting the other islands, I think it has the best of all the islands.

Which Part of Maui Is Best for Your Stay?

As in all of the Hawaiian islands, each part of Maui has its own unique weather. The north and east coasts are the rainy sides of the islands. The south side is the dry side and the west side lies in a climate between the other extremes. Even though you might get more rain in Hana than in Wailea, all of Maui is delightful year round with temperatures usually falling between 88 and 70 degrees.

South Maui -  This is the driest side of the island. There are many condos, resorts, shops, restaurants and activities available. It has some excellent golf courses as well. Beautiful beaches that are less crowded than some on the West side, make this an excellent choice.

West Maui -  From Lahaina to Kapalua is considered the west side. Beginning in Lahaina, where there is a port town feeling Crowded streets and tourist shops with live music wafting from top notch restaurants, make this a fun and entertaining place to be. Catch many excursions from here, including romantic dinner cruises, whale watching and fishing trips. Further up are awesome accommodations on the famed Ka’anapali Beach.

Kahului -  Although closest to the airport, this is about the only thing going for hotels located here. I highly recommend NOT staying here. Being close to where cargo ship docks, makes the scenery pretty bleak. It’s a half hour long drive to fun activities and nice beaches. Accommodations are inexpensive, but what you save, you’ll end up spending in gas.

Hana -  For the highly adventurous and nature loving individuals, this is the place for you. Lots of waterfalls, nature trails and beautiful beaches. Limited on amenities. Stop at Costco before coming out! Allow about two hours to get there on a winding road with 36 bridges, some of which allow only one car to cross at a time. Allow yourself plenty of time to stop at the many waterfalls and lookout opportunities. If you want to get away from civilization and experience the real Hawaii, plan on staying here.

Because I have lived on Maui for 10 years, I know the resorts and condos quite well. Remember, I will save you money by steering you to the right accommodations on the right side of Maui and snag you the best possible travel deal to go with your lodging.
