Planning on Visiting the Big Island of Hawaii?

The island of Hawaii (often called the Big Island to distinguish it from the others), is twice the size of all the other islands combined. Hawaii is the newest island in the Hawaiian volcanic chain, and it is still growing with the world’s most active volcano. The Big Island is home to world-class sporting and fishing events; it has room for every kind of activity. The island has a wide variety of climatic zones, from lava fields to lush valleys and you'll find many state historical sites and sanctuaries here. For travelers who want to experience Hawaii’s rich history and unique natural recourses, the Big Island has it all.

Which Part of the Big Island is Best for You?

Because the island of Hawaii is so large, you will want to decide what side of it to stay on before you come. Unlike the others, it is not easy to drive from side to side of the Big Island.

Hilo --  On the eastern side of Hawaii sits the historic town of Hilo, with a quaint downtown area as well as the Liliuokalani Park and Japanese Tea Garden.  Hilo is only 30 minutes from the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Volcanoes National Park -  Here you can walk on a smoldering caldera, explore lush rain forests, peer down mysterious lava tubes and hike through dramatic lunar-like volcanic landscapes. No televisions available. $10.00 entrance fee per car to enter the National Park - good for seven days.

Kailua / Keauhou / Kona --  Visit the beauty of sparkling Keauhou Bay awaits you on the Big Island’s spectacular Kona Cost. Seclusion can be found, yet convenient to a variety of shopping, dining and activities in nearby historic Kailua-Kona Town. Deep-sea fishing, snorkeling and major attractions of the Big Island can be found here as well.

Waikoloa / Mauna Lani -  The white sands of Hapuna Beach and Hawaii’s famed Kohala Coast, help to rate these as some of the best beaches in America. Golf, restaurants and a variety of ocean sports make this an enticing vacation choice.
